The Nebraska Society of Dispensing Opticians (NSDO) held its second annual Operation Eyeglasses event on Saturday, March 29, 2014 at the Kroc Center in Omaha. Over 125 people from the Salvation Army, Sienna Frances House, Open Door Mission and the Stephens Center received free eye examinations. A total of 95 pairs of new glasses were provided to those who were found to need corrective lenses.
Local Ophthalmologists Dean Arkfeld, Camilla Parson, Michael Goldstein and Brent Timperley of ilumin and Optometrist Kerri Pillen of Bellevue Vision Center all volunteered their time to do the refractions.
Operation Eyeglasses would not have happened without generous donations from the community. The Kroc Center donated their fabulous facility, including all of the set up and the tear down. We just had to show up and get straight to work. Walman instruments and Midwest Eyecare loaned us auto refractors to help us speed up the examination process. Rite-Style Optical and Walman/Omaha provideded all of the lenses we needed, plus their employees donated their time to process the lenses. Millard Family Eye gave us a box of frames and 2 boxes of cases. Mike Tirro from Safilo supplied 125 new discontinued frames and Katrina Henry from Tura donated cases.
Around 35 volunteers came out and spent their Saturday afternoon helping others. We are so grateful to have such generous people in our field.
We also had the WOWT news station come out and follow one of our participants around for the whole experience. Click here to see the story.
The Kroc Center has invited us back to hold our event again next spring. It will be Saturday afternoon, May 2, 2015. If you would like to participate in the 2015 Operation Eyeglasses, please contact Chris Tirro at firstname.lastname@example.org or call her at 402-933-6600.
